Phuket Town, the capital of Phuket Island, is a town with
old world charms and the centre of commerce and government.
All airline offices and the main bus terminal for traveling
to the other regions of Thailand are located there.
A unique town with history that dates back way before the
early Chinese and Portuguese traders first came to Phuket.
However it is these traders who have left the most enduring
mark with early Sino-Portuguese buildings now becoming landmarks
and part of the national heritage. Precious few are the buildings
that display traditional Thai architecture Distinctive art
and craft of the region can be found in the town, shopping
is cheaper and the shops have a much more to offer than what
is found the popular tourist and beach areas. Phuket town
is also well known for its vast array of delicious local snacks
and foods.
There are some very nice hotels in Phuket Town, which cater
more for the local business but are great value for the budget
conscious tourist or tourist who would like to explore Phuket
off he beaten track. From the airport to Phuket Town takes
25 minutes by car. To Patong Beach is 20 minutes. The 'best'
way to travel are traditional and colorful wood frame buses
that run between Phuket Town and beach areas on a circular
route daily from 6 am till 7 pm (cost about 20 baht). Even
if you do not stay in Phuket Town, it is certainly an interesting
place worth walking around for a day or two taking in the
sights.
